About Athletic Federation of India

The Athletic Federation of India (AFI) is the national governing body for track and field athletics in India. Established in 1946, AFI is responsible for the promotion, development, and regulation of athletics across the country.

AFI oversees all aspects of athletics in India, including national championships, athlete development programs, coaching education, and international representation. The federation is affiliated with World Athletics (formerly IAAF), the Asian Athletics Association, and the Indian Olympic Association.

With headquarters in New Delhi, AFI works through 32 state and union territory associations to identify and nurture athletic talent from grassroots to elite levels. Our mission is to make India a leading nation in athletics by providing world-class training, competition opportunities, and support systems for athletes.

Registration Process

Athletes must register through their respective state associations. All entries must be submitted through the official AFI online portal.

  • Step 1: Obtain registration form from state association
  • Step 2: Complete medical certificate and eligibility documents
  • Step 3: Submit through state association portal
  • Step 4: Receive confirmation from AFI office

Coaching & Development

AFI Coaching Education Program

The AFI Coaching Education Program is designed to develop qualified coaches at all levels of the sport. Our certification system follows international standards set by World Athletics.

Introduction to coaching fundamentals. Suitable for school teachers and beginner coaches.

Duration: 5 days
Eligibility: 12th pass with participation in athletics

Specialized training in specific event groups. Required for coaching at club and district levels.

Duration: 10 days
Eligibility: Level 1 certification + 1 year coaching experience

Advanced coaching for state and national level athletes. Includes sports science and performance analysis.

Duration: 15 days
Eligibility: Level 2 certification + 3 years coaching experience

AFI coaching clinic

National Training Centres

National Institute of Sports, Patiala

Primary high-performance training center with world-class facilities for athletics, including synthetic tracks, gymnasium, and sports science support.

Focus: Elite athlete preparation

Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru

High-altitude training facility with specialized centers for middle and long-distance running. Hosts national camps throughout the year.

Focus: Endurance events

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi

AFI headquarters with indoor training facilities, rehabilitation center, and administrative offices. Hosts national championships.

Focus: Sprints, jumps, throws
